Energy Storage YoY – Number of Rounds and Total Funding

Counting post IPO and debt funding rounds, the energy storage sector witnessed a nearly 200% YoY rise in total funding activity, with $2.9B invested in 118 rounds.

The surge in funding activity is primarily attributed to startups in the energy storage systems space, which collectively bagged $2.3B, in the process accounting for nearly 80% of the total funding secured by the energy storage sector. The windfall in funding activity into this business model is primarily attributed towards a renewed focus on energy storage solutions for residential and utilities consumers over the past one year.

Around $600M worth of funding into this business model was raised in the last three months alone, with a considerable proportion going into startups offering power storage solutions for grid applications, a market that is rapidly growing. The post IPO funding round of China-based Sungrow ($400M) in August and the debt funding round secured by Canadian Solar ($95M) in October accounted for the lion’s share of the funding activity.

In the power storage technology domain, battery manufacturers are increasingly trying out higher density and increased safety energy storage alternatives as the traditional Lithium-ion chemistry now steps into a stage of technological maturity. As a result, companies developing batteries through innovative chemistries have seen a YoY rise in total funding with nearly $120M being funded in 2016, compared to the $37M in 2015. Some of the companies in this space include US-based Ambri ($50M), Netherlands-based Elestor (undisclosed funding) and AquaBattery (undisclosed funding).

The sector has also witnessed the emergence of innovative terrestrial energy storage technologies with energy being stored in mediums ranging from gravel to ice. Some of the companies in this space include US-based Ice Energy ($92M), Quidnet Energy ($1M) Energy Cache (undisclosed funding) and India-based Inficold.

From a sector holistic perspective, energy storage systems ($4.6B), startups developing commercial battery & battery solutions ($3.7B) and companies dealing with developing and manufacturing fuel cells as an energy generation & energy storage technology ($2B) emerged as the top three business models by funding.

Energy Storage - Major Acquisitions in the Last One Year

The energy storage sector witnessed close to 10 acquisitions this year. The acquisitions of China-based Yinlong (for $2B) by Gree and France-based Saft (for $1.1B) by Total emerged as the biggest buyouts by deal value. Some of the other notable buyout deals include UK-based Accutronic’s acquisition (for $11M) by Ultralife Corp and US-based Green Charge’s acquisition (undisclosed) by Engie.

Intel Capital (12), Conduit Ventures (9), Khosla Ventures (9) and KPCB (9) were the most active private investors by portfolio numbers. However, the US Department of Energy is the most active investor in this sector with a total of 29 portfolio companies. CIA’s venture investment arm In-Q-Tel also emerged as one of the active investors with eight portfolio companies. Techstars (3) was active at the seed stage while Conduit Ventures (5) and Draper Fisher Jurvetson (4) were active at Series A. Intel Capital (5) and Draper Fisher Jurvetson (4) were the most active investors at the Series B stage. At the late investment stages, KPCB (6) and Khosla Ventures (5) were the most active.
