Report: 2016 In The Food Tech Landscape Closed with 16 Acquisitions as Series B Dollars Surged [673 Pages]

The food tech landscape in 2016 saw 377 companies emerge with funding activity dipping marginally by 28% and number of funding rounds declining by 22% from previous year. Number of funding rounds fell across the board with late stage registering the maximum dip of 51% followed by seed (25%) and early stage (13%).

Chart from Tracxn Food Tech Report of March 2017Average ticket size in early stage showed the sharpest uptick for Series B (29%) with funding dollars falling for both seed (33%) and Series A (20%). While YoY funding for seed and early displayed a flat trend, funding dollars for late stage took a hit by 37%.

Chart from Tracxn Food Tech Report of March 2017By the stage of entry, 500 Startups was the top investor for seed (34), Khosla Ventures for Series A (10), Sequoia for Series B (7) and Goldman Sachs for later stage (5) investments.

Ele.me amassed largest funding of $1.3B from VC giants Alibaba and Ant Financial followed by Deliveroo with $275M (Series E). 500 Startups with investments in 54 companies and SOSV in 32 led the tally of most active investors.

Historically, the food ordering model has attracted the lion’s share of investment ($9B) with 2798 companies running on this business model. In 2016, it drew investments worth $2.4B across 185 rounds.The year saw 16 acquisitions of which deal values of only four were disclosed among which Anova Culinary’s buy by Electrolux Group for $250M closed at the highest.

Five companies among which London based platforms for online ordering for takeaway orders Just Eat ($129M) and takeaway ($119M) have taken the IPO route since 2014.

Report: Late Stage Investments Increase Exponentially in the Wearable Tech Landscape in 2016; Year Closes with Nine Acquisitions [279 Pages]

The average ticket size only rose for Series B investments by 27% with a 17% drop for Series A and 33% drop for seed.

By stage of entry, HAX with investments in 15, came out at the top for seed, Khosla Ventures for Series A (7), DCM for Series B (3) and Norwest Venture Partners for later Stage (3).  Top investments in the last year include Codoon raising a Series C round of $50M led by FountainVest Partners and Focus Media, and Chrono Therapeutics raising $48M (Series B). The last year saw nine companies getting acquired among which motion processing solutions provider InvenSense getting scooped up by TDK for $1.3B was the highest disclosed deal value. Since 2014, five companies in this space have taken the IPO route.

Historically, consumer devices has been the most investment friendly business model ($2.7B) with 1121 companies operating in this space, notable ones being Jawbone and GoPro.
